Van Horn Green Sprangletop is a native, perennial, warm-season bunchgrass with fibrous roots. Van Horn is a widely used commercial seed variety that is well adapted to all regions and soils for achieving rapid vegetation cover. Green Sprangletop is a fair to good forage for livestock and provides good wildlife cover. It is an excellent filler grass for range seed mixes and is used extensively in erosion control and reclamation plantings, including in highway right of way seed mixes throughout Texas.
Van Horn Green Sprangletop was originally collected near Van Horn in the Trans Pecos Ecoregion of West Texas. It was developed for release by the USDA NRCS Knox City Plant Materials Center. Van Horn is typically the fasted emerging native grass used in Texas, and it is a mainstay of most native grass seed mixes.
Uses: Used chiefly for rangeland restoration, reclamation plantings, as a component of native seed mixes, and for erosion control.
