Sand Dropseed

Sand Dropseed

Sand dropseed is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows 1-3’ tall. It is widely distributed across Texas and the southwest, and grows well on highly disturbed soils making it a viable option for ecologic restoration projects and energy and transporation right-of-way use. It provides fair forage for livestock and is utilized as a food source by game birds, including quail and Rio Grande turkey.

Sand dropseed is an important component of range restoration seed mixes, especially in west and south Texas where the grass most common. In most cases, sand dropseed will be one of the first native grasses to emerge in a mixed species planting. It is tolerant of moderately saline and alkaline sites, very sandy soils, and areas prone to drought and erosion. It should be planted as part of a mix of other species, as stand health and vigor typically declines over time without disturbance. Sources of seed commercially available include Nueces Sand Dropseed, Borden County Sand Dropseed, as well as a variety of wild-harvested seed sources.
